What Leadership Should Leave Behind

I have become less interested in how impressive a leader looks while they are present and more interested in what remains after they leave.

If the team becomes helpless the moment the leader is absent, something important was never transferred.

Leadership should increase capability

A leader can solve every problem personally and still weaken the organization. The stronger standard is whether people around that leader become more capable of thinking, deciding, teaching, and carrying responsibility.

That lesson runs through The Work Came Before the Theory. My journey taught me that leadership is not made stronger by making everyone dependent on the leader. Stewardship moves knowledge.

That is also becoming part of how I think about consulting through the Alvarez Stewardship Method. A useful intervention should not make a client permanently dependent on the consultant. It should leave the organization better able to see and solve its own problems.
