Too many organizations wait until someone receives a title before they begin developing the person for leadership.
By then, the organization may already be asking that person to learn people leadership while simultaneously being judged on results.
Leadership pipelines should start earlier
The operator who trains new employees, the quality technician who protects standards, the bilingual employee who keeps communication moving, or the team member others already trust may be displaying leadership before the organization formally recognizes it.
Development should notice that. It should also distinguish technical competence from readiness to lead people. The best operator is not automatically the best supervisor, just as the strongest salesperson is not automatically the strongest sales manager.
This is one reason From Operator to Management matters to the training work I am developing. I want the future modules to address the transition itself rather than pretending promotion completes it.
If your organization is developing frontline leaders before promotion, explore Supervisor and Frontline Leadership Development or Leadership Development Consulting.
